Celebrating Caribbean Heritage in DC - First with Caribbean Food

Today, the kickoff of Caribbean Heritage month is a celebration of the Caribbean Food in DC! I'm not going to lie, we really have a sweet thing here in DC. Two blocks away from my home, I can bite into a succulent aloo pie with tamarind sauce, pholourie, get some sorrel and eat a currants roll ANY. DAY. OF. THE. WEEK (well except Monday's when Crown Bakery and Sunrise Caribbean Restaurants are closed). That luxury/privilege is not to be taken for granted. Outside of NY and maybe Miami, where else in the US can you really find good Caribbean food and restaurants within walking distance of your apartment in the city and top rated Caribbean chefs?

I live in Ward 4, which is reputed to have the highest number of residents of Caribbean heritage in  Washington, DC, so maybe I am spoiled with the food, but from jerk chicken, to panamanian, to vegan Trini curry (yes we have a spot that does vegan Caribbean catering), shrimp and fish tacos, bake and saltfish, stew chicken and callaloo, I can have it all! As much as I miss the sweet cooking of my mom in Trinidad, I really am pleased with all the Caribbean food options in DC. I can't wait to share my Caribbean food tour with you guys.  What are some of your favorite Caribbean or Caribbean owned restaurants for me to check out? Comment below with your ideas.

We'll  start the food tour with a stop at  the Launch of Caribbean Heritage Month tonight: if you haven't as yet, RSVP: ccmonth.eventbrite.com

It's FREE!!

See you there!
